Who are our volunteers and what do they do?

Shelter Read-Aloud Volunteers (Must be at least 18): REACH uses a team approach to reading. Read-Aloud volunteers visit shelters on a monthly basis to read to the children as well as engage them in learning activities.  Each of our eleven partner shelters has a designated weekly reading team, so the volunteer requirement is generally one hour per month. All read-aloud volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have reliable transportation, will need to attend a training and have to go through a background check through Verified Volunteers ($13).  Contact volunteer@reachreads.org for more information about obtaining a background check through Verified Volunteers.

PLEASE NOTE:  No outside children are allowed at the read-aloud sessions. It violates our shelter agreements and would be a matter of discomfort for the kids in the shelter. We thank you for your understanding.

Event Volunteers: We have many special events throughout the year such as our annual corporate Survivor Challenge in July, partnering with Festevents to bartend at events like Harborfest, Wine Festival, or various festival appearances/Bookmark Imagination Station, as well as our holiday book drive with select Barnes & Noble locations.

Book Delivery: REACH delivers thousands of books to our partner shelters throughout the year.  With only two full-time staff members, it is helpful to have volunteers who can deliver books to area shelters during the weekday’s.  These volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have reliable transportation, able to lift 20-50lbs, and will need to go through the same Verified Volunteers background check as a read-aloud volunteer.

Administrative Volunteers: We are always in need of support in the office. Projects include sorting and arranging books, doing inventory and other general office duties. Volunteers of most ages may participate in this opportunity.

Corporate Volunteerism: REACH welcomes companies who want to volunteer for the Shelter Read-Aloud Program.  Here are some of the companies that already participate with us:  Norfolk Southern, Zim Shipping, Booz Allen Hamilton, Chubb Insurance, and Navy Federal Credit Union.  If a number of volunteers from the same company want to participate together, we will place you on a team together.  We will also come to your office for training onsite.

Military, Civic Groups or Faith Organizations: Many military commands and organizations are looking for programs that can be done without taking time away from the workplace.  This is a great program for groups to team-build and leadership train while helping our organization. If a number of volunteers from the same command or organizations want to participate together, we will place you on a team together.  All volunteers must be trained and complete all of the necessary paperwork.
